I bought a new IPOD in May 28th, 2004. Apple IPOD 40 Gigabyte Model A1040 for just about $470. I have been using it almost every day since that date but have had problem and haven't been able to reproduce it the issue.
I would hit play button, lock the IPOD so it wouldn't go off while in the case. Than all of the sudden it would go off for no reason at all. I would turn take it out and turn it back on.
It happened enough that I decided to go the the Apple discussion forums to find if anyone else was having the problem. Sure enough other had a similar problem. Now the issue has been identified as a BUG by APPLE. If you want to check the bug out click here . The fix. Click Here

The BUG
This is what the folks at Apple asked me to do to confirm this as a BUG.
- Reformatted IPOD
- I put 1 song on the IPOD.
- Turned on IPOD
- Held Menu and Play button down for 10 seconds.
- IPOD reboots and comes up defaulting to play list.
- Hit the play button twice.
- On the screen up in the left hand corner you should see a || which means the song is paused but the song is actually playing. The time played is at 0:00 and the total time -4:24 in this case.
- At exactly 2 minutes into the song the IPOD shuts off. As I said the IPOD is not showing how much time is left on the song
9/10/2004 - I just spoke to Apple and they have confirmed that this is now a know reproduced BUG. APPLE indicated that it will go to engineering to be fixed and will be available in a future release of the software.
